EOLIAN: new blade materials offering improved recyclability and sustainability

31 January 2025

Today’s wind turbine blades are manufacturing using thermoset composite materials. Recycling these materials is challenging and solutions are not yet widely available.

EOLIAN blades will be manufactured using vitrimers, a new class of polymer that enables recyclable composite materials. The use of vitrimers paves the way to different solutions for end-of-service blades.

Vitrimers also exhibit ‘self-healing’ properties, making it possible to repair minor blade damage on-site by localised heating.

EOLIAN is exploring the use of novel bio-based vitrimers combined with natural basalt fibre reinforcements to manufacture highly sustainable composites.
